Domaine Armand Rousseau

"Enjoyment, Love, and Sharing are the core values of our family."

                  - Domaine Armand Rousseau

Strong values and a genuine love of the work, handed down from generation to generation - herein lies the secret of this family. Fine, elegant, honest, the Rousseau wines are quintessentially Burgundian. They are the genuine expression of the terroir and the work of the winemaker. The family works tirelessly with a simple, single purpose - make great wines, enjoy the end product, and find ways to make it even better.

The story of this legendary Domaine traces back to 1902, when Armand Rousseau, then only 18, inherited several plots of Gevrey Chambertin. Originally from a family of winemakers and with a marriage in 1909 that brought additional parcels, the elder Rousseau quickly grew the family business through the 1920s. Notably, the entrepreneurial Rousseau started bottling his own wines, rather than selling the grapes to negotiant businesses - the usual practice in Burgundy at the time. Rousseau was also one of the first from the region to enter the United States market after the Prohibition in the 1930s.

Business flourished under the elder Rousseau and continued to grow under his son, Charles, who entered the family business in 1946. Fluent in French, English, and German, and with degrees in law and oenology, Charles expanded the family business through exports to the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, and ultimately to the Rest of the World.

The current winemakers are the third and the fourth generation - Eric Rousseau and his daughter, Cyrielle. Entering the family business in 1982, Eric spent his early years on improving the vineyards, introducing new techniques such as green harvesting, leaf thinning, and working on the soil without insecticides or chemical additives. Through these efforts, he steered the Domaine to a more organic process and encouraged traditional methods with minimal intervention. Cyrielle, Eric's daughter, having joined the business in 2014, will undoubtedly carry the work forward, ensuring that the philosophy of the Domaine and the values of the family are handed down to another generation.
