The family behind Vietti Barolo

Vietti Barolo

Many will try, though few will reach the eminent fame and caliber of the Vietti family estate. Spanning an impressive 90 acres across Piedmont's most celebrated appellations, including nine communes within Barolo, Vietti wines are amongst the most distinguishable in all of northern Italy. And it’s not just the wines that bring Vietti the repute it deserves-- in fact, the winery is actually responsible for Piedmont’s tradition of single-vineyard bottling, as well as the present-day success of the Arneis grape. Deep history and unmatchable quality comprise every hand-crafted bottle that leaves the family estate.

The estate currently farms over 25 single vineyards and produces 15 different cuvées. Vines are organically farmed and range in age from 10 to 90 years old, producing high-quality, healthy fruit. They make wines that are exciting to both the Barolo purists as well as those just learning about the region.

The 2013 vintage in Barolo is garnering lots of praise and will certainly go down as one of the top years in this decade. The wines from 2013 are classically built with detailed, lifted aromatics, great structure, and finesse. The Vietti 13s exemplify this and show a perfect balancing act between explosive aromas with nuanced weight on the palate.

The Lazzarito site, located in Serralunga d'Alba, is a dense planting of 35+ year old Nebbiolo vines with perfect southwest exposure where the soils are a mix of clay and limestone. The wine spends 30 months in a mix of Slovenian and French oak before bottling. This is powerful, full-bodied Barolo. It has incredible purity on the nose and a rich, mouth-filling texture. This is a wine that will reward those who are patient enough to lay it down for some time.
